This work entitled "Assessing the problem of Reading comprehension in Day Secondary Schools : The Case of Selected Fourth Form Classes in Bujumbura City" Sought to find out the different causes of the learners' deficiencies in the reading skill domain. It also sought to know the problems encountered by the English teachers while teaching reading lessons without forgetting the difficulties caused by the environment in which the teaching/learning process takes place. After my investigation, I came out with the following findings :
- The lack of material or its shortage is one of the main problems encountered by the learners and teachers;
- Insufficiency of time and lack of reading supervision, bad reading environment and weak reading background are among the problems that hamper the reading comprehension teaching/learning (added to the large size class problem).
-The lack of teachers' awareness to encourage extensive reading and supervision, the lack of help from the programme planners and the goverment in general and the lack of parents' awareness to let their pupils read easily at home in particular, are also some factors.
In the light of the above findings, a number of recommendations are addressed to the following education partners : pupls, teachers, parents, the government, and programme planners and future researchers.
