This study aims at finding out difficulties encountered in the teaching and learning of English as a foreign language in Burundi state primary schools in general and in NDAVA commune public primary schools in particular.
This work was motivated by the fact that the primary school teachers, though teach English, are not competent in that language to enable students to express themslves accurately. The shortage of adequate teachning materials, non-qualification of primary school teachers, unfavorable environment to promote better English language learning and pupils'attitudes were the main obstacles to the succes of English teaching / lerning in public primary schools in Burundi. A written questionnaire, pupils' interview and classroom observation were the techniques used to collect data from the respondents in five public primary schools visited in NDAVA commune. The data collected were presented in the form of tables, analyzed and after interpreted.

The analysis of data revealed that the public primary school English teachers are not competent to teach English at that level and the primary school English materials are not sufficient to help the learners acquire English language efficiently and the teachers to perfom well in the teaching of it.

From these findings, recommendations were made and directed to different parters who are involved in the domain, namely the policy makers, teachers and pupils and further researchers to continue investigating on the other levels in the teaching / learning of the English language in Burundi
