RESUME,
This study investigated the problems encountered by teachers during the teaching and learning of English in Burundi Basic schools in general and in 7th form classes in particular.The study was conducted in Gahombo Commune and 9 schools were selected.256 informants among whom 238 learners,9 teachers and 9 headmasters were taken as sample population.Questionnaires were elaborated according to five research hypotheses such as:The non-qualification of teachers of 7th Form do not use appropriate methodology to teach English,both teachers and learners of English lessons does not facilitate good English teaching/learning.Data from both teachers and learners in 7th form were collected by using questionnaire and learners' questionnaire,interview and classroom observation,it was found out that 7th form classes of basic schools,there is shortage of teaching materials.Classes do not have enough teaching materials.It was also found out that the time allotted to English lessons is not enough and teachers'and learners'negative attitudes towards English have a negative impact on teaching learning of English.Through interview and teachers' questionnaire,it was found out that teachers in Basic schools are not qualified for teaching English.
