RESUME,

The aim of this study was to identify the difficulties encountered in teaching and learning the speaking skill in large classes of first year Language sections of post-basic schools.The study set out to verify the following hypotheses;in large classes ,English teachers do not often teach the speaking skill;in large classes,English teachers do not use adequate techniques and methods when teaching the speaking skill;the materials that enchance the speaking skill are not used while teaching English in large classes.To collect the data in the field,the researccher used classroom observation and written questionnaires for both teachers and learners .After the analysis of the collect data,it was found out that the major factors affecting the teaching and learning of the speaking skill are the following :the large number of students in one class,the misuse of the techniques for teaching and learning the speaking skill,the lack of materials,appropriate to the speaking skill,the insufficient time that both teachers and learners give to that skill and also the non-qualification of english teachers.The study ended with a general conclusion and some recommendations for partners who are the most concerned by the education system and the teaching of English in particular.
