This study entitled "An Assessment of Factors Hindering the Teaching and Learning of the Reading Skill in Burundi Secondary Schools. A case study of second form arts classes in some selected schools in Rumonge province" aimed at investigating the different factors affecting the teaching/learning of the reading skill such as the teachers ' methods, the learners' attitude, the lack of materials and the time allocated to the teaching and the teaching and learning of the reading skill. The study was conducted in six public schools in Rumonge province. Two questionnaires were used to collect data, i.e, teacher's and pupils'questionnaire supported by a classroom observation. The data collected were analyzed and findings revealed that the teachers do not appropriately develop the methods and strategies needed for an efficient teaching and learning of the reading skill, the reading materials are not relevant, appropriate and sufficient, the learners, attitude affects the process of the teaching and learning the reading skill. We also noticed that the time allotted to the reading impacts the reading comprehension. The study concluded by giving recommendations to the government, the school administration, the teachers, the learners and the future researchers.
