  <abstract>RESUME,

This case study of secondary schools addresses the problems of equipping learners with relevant reading skills for improving the english language level needed in real life.It is intended to finding out how much reading is taught as functional literacy for learners in secondary schools.The study was conducted in three communes of Rutana province:Mpinga-Kayove,Musongati and Rutana commune,where first From Arts classes were selected from six schools.The design of the study was basically qualitative and quantitative.Data were collect not only questionnaires for both teachers and learners and classroom observation.After data analysis,findings revealed that reading materials used in Burundi secondary schools are insufficient and not waried,there is an inadequacy  of techniques used to teach the reading skill and that students'attitudes influence the learning of English through reading skill.It was recommended that reading skills get more focus.The government and school staff were also required to sensitize and improving the learning of english in secondary schools in general and the reading skills in particular.</abstract>
