RESUME,

This study deals with the impact of English songs on the competence and performance of High School students.It aims to find out the effectiveness and practicality of English songs on the competence and performance of English learners.It also aims to test if songs can be helpful in the learning and teaching of languages in general and the English language in particular.Moreover,it aims to determine the attitude of students towards the use of English songs.Finally,it aims to compare ability of students terms of competence and performance in the English language between those who use English songs and those who do not.Besides,this study intends to find solution to the fact that most of students finish their secondary studies without being able to produce English either in writing or speaking whereas they have been taking English as a course at least 6 years.
As for methodology,Bujumbura city is an area of research.The researcher got a list of 42 schools which had second modern arts and selected 9 schools where he conducted research using with a ratio of 1/10 and one school was chosen randomly where he conducted a research analyzing songs.The techniques used to get samples are systematic list and random techniques .The instruments used are questionnaire,recorders,texts of selected songs and their audios.
Results indicate that English songs help students to get new vocabulary,idioms to practice and develop the four language skills and get a way of using the language to express meaning beyond literal meaning of words.It has been found that students have a positive attitude towards English songs.Furthermore,it was found that students who use English songs are more competent and fluent than those who do not.
