This study investigates students' English pronunciation errors, their sources and their impact on oral communication. It was carried out at the upper level of Burundi secondary education in Kirundo Province.Fifty-six students and five teachers of first Form Arts provided me with information on this study.Four hypotheses were used as provisionnal answers to the research questions. These are:(1) Kirundi and French pronunciations interfere a lot with Burundian learners' English pronunciation,(2) Kirundo secondary schools lack adequate teaching/learning materials for enchancing English pronunciation,(3) Kirundo teachers of English do not enhance English language pronunciation from the lower level,(4) the mispronunciation of English impedes on the learners oral and aural proficiency. Then, to collect data,a teachers' questionnaire,a students' listening test and a pronunciation test were used. With these research tools, the researcher was able to determine shortcomings in English pronunciation teaching/learning and the impact of neglecting it.Concerning students' errors, they relate to vowel and diphthong pronunciation errors, consonnant confusion and supra-segmental errors. As for sources of pronunciation errors, they are carried over from Kirundi and French.Schools also lack adequate pronunciation teaching/learning materials.Besides ,errors pile up from the beginning level since teachers do not focus on pronunciation.Sources of errors are also due to the mismatch in English pronunciation and spelling. This study further shows that there is a relationship between students' pronunciation erors and unintelligibility in producing and /or grasping English speech. Therefore,it is recommended thet the young learners be exposed to good teachers with a good pronunciation.Other recommendations are addressed to the government,to the teachers ,to the students and to future reseachers.
