RESUME,
This study aims at identifying problems encountered by first Modern Arts pupils in developing the listening skill.It was conducted on the following hypotheses:Teachers do not put into consideration the importance of listerning skill in teaching English in post basic schools,the familiarity with listerning course plays an important role in the development of listerning skill and learners do not get enough opportunities to develop their listerning skill when being taught English.Thearea of the study was Mutaho commune and four schools containing the first Form Arts were investigated with a population of 64 pupils' and four teachers .To collect the data,the researcher came up with the folowing findings:pupils in secondary schools face great problems which hinder their development of the listening skill such as to catch native speakers' accent,since we know that the communication is not successful if the spoken discporse is not caught and understood.So,those pupils mainly fail in listening comprehension because of the unfamiliarity with the native speaker's accent,the lack of adequate materials,poor coursse attendance,lack of teachers' suitable methodology,lack of motivation and negative attitude towards the listerning skill lesson.
