Résumé,
This work aims at examining characteristics of the countryside and those of the city and shows how these characteristics influence characters in Buchi Emecheta's The joys of Motherhood, It shows how traditional beliefs and customs in the village area and the influence of modernity in the city shape and reshape relations in the light of marriage, occupation and gender differences. With reference to The joys of Motherhood this study seeks to prove the assumption that the beliefs and traditional customs in the countryside have negative impacts on women while the challenges of the city breaks chains of tradition and give women relative freedom. The countryside and the city have aspects that operate together to determine social organisation of marriage and occupation according to gender. Written under the background of feminist approach, it concludes that women are victims of tradition but their freedom will come through economic independence, self-awareness and education which are the major aspects of the city.
