RÉSUME,
This work entitled " An Analysis of Factors affecting the Oral Communicative Performance in English as a Foreign Language: Case of First Form Arts in selected public secondary schools in Bujumbura City. " This study was guided by the following hypotheses:
- This teachers' attitude towards the speaking skill affects negatively the speaking affects negatively the development of students' oral communicative performance.
- The lack of adequate teaching materials hinders the development of students' oral communicative performance.
- The minguistic environment is not favorable to the learning of students' oral communicative performance.
I was motivated by the fact that:
- The speaking skill is given little importance in the school curriculum. In fact, there is an inability among students and school leavers to communicate
efficiently and appropriately using English while ot is an important tool of communication which must be mastered.
- Other researchers have concentrated on ways of teaching the speaking skill without considering deeply the factors that the students' oral communicative
performance.
To achieve this goal, a questionnaire for both teachers and students and classroom observation were used as data collection techniques. My population was therefore made of ninety pupils of First Form Arts and six teachers of the same form. It was deducted from the survey that the lack of adequate teaching materials, students' attitude towards English language and the Burundian linguistic environment affects negatively the teaching/learning of speaking skill in First From Arts. For the improvement of the speaking skill, recommendation improvement of the speaking skill, recommendations were made to different parteners involved in the teaching of the English language.
