This work entitled "A Feminist Analysis of Chopin's The Awakening" examines characters portrayed by Kate Chopin in The Awakening. Through the use of feminist theory and partially the use of psychological theory, the work examines characters'state of living basically on the ideals of conformity and non-conformity within social conventions. Some characters are presented as conformists to conventions and others as individuals, Furthermore, this work tackles women's cause under the patriarchal myth which defines women as inferior. It is evident that women are victims of social restrictions imposed by patriarchy. Hence, this thesis is based on the hypothesis that Kate Chopin challenges the view that women are passive, powerless, and inferior and dependent to men. This thesis suggests a solution to overcome the women's subjugation in appealing to women to break the social conventions perpetuated by patriarchy in ordre to liberate themselves from the limits of patriarchy. This thesis aims at changing patriarchal ideology that treats women as inferior, passive if f not always submissive. Instead, women are able to demonstrate heir strength in building the society. The work aims however at encouraging the society to cancel up all negative stereotypes based on gender and sex. |
