Résumé,<br/><br/>This study examined female portrayal in the Afro-American society and the Ibo society of Nigeria. It analysed and evaluated the portrayal of the female characters in Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye and Flora Nwapa's Efuru. In the course of the study, we tried to expose the presentation of black American women as victims of white standards of beauty and as victims of sexism. We further explored the protagonst through Efuru, struggle against fontiers created by male ideologies. From a comparative analysis, the work showed similarities and diffèrences in the experiences of these women from different backgrounds. Our study is carried out against the hypothetical thrust that Toni Morrison in The Bluest Eye and Flora Nwapa in Efuru portray their female characters as vctims of male oppression and societal norms against which they wrestle for freedom. These wmen are portrayed in their effort to free themselves from the shackles of tradition, male oppression and racism. With the use of he feminist theory, this work highlighted the ways and strategies used by women to fight against oppression and victimization<br/><br/> |
