RESUME<br/><br/>This work examines the role of the woman in Arnah's The Beautyful ones Are Not Yet Born and Chinua Achebe's Anthills of the Sovannah. The work is based on the role of the woman in modern societies as presented by Achebe and Arnah respectively. We in the course of this study investigate and throw light on the constructive role of the woman in a dictatorial Nigerian community and the compromising role of the modern woman in a corrupted post-colonial Ghanaian context. Thus, these writers view the role of the woman differently. Arnah in his novel. The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born sees a woman as evil, materialist whereas Chinua Achebe's Anthills of the Savannah sees a woman as responsible, intelligent humble, ready to resist the evil forces of dictatorship and tradition. In this view, this study operates on the premise that the role of the woman is viewed differently depending upon the authors" vison and experience. It is in this way that Arnnah, in The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born, presents his woman as being evil, ready to push her husband to margins. As far as Achebe is concerned, in Anthills of the Savannah, he presents the woman as a source of strength.<br/> |
