This work examines the themes of fate and free will in Ola rotimi's the Gods are not be Blame and Wole Soyinka's The Strong Breed.It explores the role of the gods in determining human fate and shows to what extent man's free will can be measured.<br/>It further shows how Rotini and Soyinka use their plays to expose human weaknesses and the influence of institution on human fate and free will.<br/>This work is based on the hypothesis that the free will of caracters in the Gods are not be Blame and The Strong Breed is limited as their fate is to an extent controlled and determined by the Gods.<br/>Through the interaction between the ordinary men and the Gods,we conclud that man lacks full control and autonomy over his actions. Our analysis of the plays was made possible by situating our arguments whithin the beliefs of the Yoruba of Nigeria. This thesis is written within the framework of New Historicism as it enables us to place the plays under study intheir historical and cultural contexts. |
