RESUME,<br/><br/>In the perspective of teaching and learning English language, reserch has been carried out in order to improve the teaching in Burundi secondary schools. This study on the " Assessment of the Teaching and Learning of the Reading Skills inSecondary schools of Ntega Commune" is conducted in that commune because it has a large number of basic-schools i.e 25 basic schools and 4 secondary schools. Anther reason of conducting such a study is that Ntega is the neighboring commune of Rwanda where the language teaching is English and there are also no other research done about teaching and learning of the reading skills. To get the reliable information, the researcher has used questionnaires for both pupils which comprised 14 questions and teachers which comprised 13 questions distributed to 6 English teachers. We selected 92 pupils among 362 using a quarter regarding the size of our informants. WHile distributing the pupil's questionnaire, we used the attendency lists and the questions were written in English. The collected data were presented in tables, interpreted and submitted to a statistical analysis. The findings reveal that the teachers do not train their pupils in getting the specific information quickly and 83.4% of the respondents do not involve their pupils in reading as exercises. The teaching materials are not sufficient in secondary schools are not sufficient the reason why only 33.3% of the teachers surveyed prefer to teach the reading lesson and all the informants are complaining about insufficient time allocated to the teaching of English. So all the premises on which we base our study are proven right. Finally, we recommend the Government to invest much in education, the B.E.P.E.P.F. is recommended to conceive teaching materials which are intresting to young pupils and avail them on time and teachers have to give many exercises of reading in or out the classroom. |
