Résumé,<br/><br/>The thesis sets out to examine intra tribal conflicts among Umwaro people at the advent of colonialism in Igbo land as reflected in chinua Achebe's Arrow of God. Our analysis mainly focuses on the intra tribal conlicts around political, social and religious issues that characterize the actions and thoughts of Ezeulu, Nwaka and Oduche Who want to part with his father's traditional religion in order to embrace Christianism. The study furtherr explores the consequences of these conflicts and shows what the author points out as solutions to such conflicts. It shows how these internal conflicts work in the interest of the colonialists. This study is based on the hypothetical contention that the intra tribal conflicts that characterize the relationships between indigenous leaders in Chinua Achebe's Arrow of God weaken traditional institutions and give way to the triumph of western institutions. Written against the backdrop of New Historicism, the researcher situates his arguments within Nigeria's experiences during the period of colonialism. It concludes that intra tribal conflicts are fuelled both by the weaknesses of traditional leaders who abuse their offices and the colonialists who sow seeds of discord to better penetrate the natives. Our study therefore raises awareness and call for caution on issues that generate intra tribal conflicts. |
