RÉSUME,<br/><br/>This workexamines the practice oftribalism and the role of the church as presented in Clive Lewis' Rebel without a Gun. It brings out the expressive nature of tribalism in Mashariki, a fictional name given to Uganda by the author under study. It discusses the causes of tribalism in Mashariki nation as reflected in the novel. It also interrogates the role of the church in the context of tribalism in Mashariki. This study further describes the consequences of tribalism in Mashariki nation as reflected in the novel. It also interragates the role of the church in the context of tribalism in Mashiriki. This study further describes the consequences of tribalism on Mashariki society. In this light, this work operates on three assumptions: First, in Clive Lewis' Rebel without a Gun, the oppression of Anjeri tribal group by the Achwala is rooted in colonial enterprise. Second, the church plays a dual role in the process of reconciling both tribal groups and third, the tribalism in all its manifestations leads to criminality and poverty in the Mashariki nation. The questions answered in the cause of this study are the following: In Rebel without a Gun, what are the cause of tribalism? What are the consequences of tribalism in the Mashariki nation? What is the role played by the church while reconciling the Anjeri and the Achwala? Written against the background of Sociological Approach by Karl Max and Frindrich Engels, this work bases its analysis on the discrimination of the Anjeri by the Achwala depriving them from their rights socially, economically, and politically, which engenders in civil war among both tribes. What emerges from this discussion is that the manifestations of tribalism in Mashariki extend to social, political and economic discrimination by the Achwala over the Anjeri. In such a conflictual situation between the Achwala and the Anjeri, the role of the church is to bring those tribes together by building schools, hospitals as well as churches which are open for everyone. This work is a glance to all those groups of people who seem to worship the same God but, on the contrary, are dreaming about eliminating their fellows in order to enrich rapidly. Future researchers should work and go far with the advantages of peace, security and unity in Rebel without a Gun. |
