A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree "Licencié en langue et littérature anglaises"

The english language is learnt through formal education in Burundi. The students were used to start learning this language in sixth forms of the secondary schools in former years, but the english is taught nowadays from primary school to universities. Nonetheless, this subject is developed through the four skills namely reading, writing, speaking, and listening as well. the researcher opted to study one independent skill of reading. This study is an attempt to analyze the harm resulting from inadequate teaching and learning the reading skill in Kabezi secondary schools with the hope that creating awareness of it, solutionswillbe found towards this inadequacy. In the study, therefore, hypothesis n° 1 was that the reading skill is not well taught in secondary schools. And hypothesis 2 was that the time allotted to English course in arts 3rd forms still need to be added, the third hypothesis was that the methods of reading are not used enough whereas the fourth hypothesis was that the english materials are not available in Kabezi secondary schools. The study was conducted with five teachers and fifty three students from five schools in Kabezi commune. These are :
-Lycée communal Mubone
-Lycée communal Kimina
-Lycée communal Kabezi
-Lycée communalMigera
-Lycée communalMutumba
Two questionnaires were used to collect data from teachers and studentys. the data collected with the questionnaires was analyzed questions by question with frequencies and percentages. It was rerevealed that negative attitudes of students, insufficiency of reading materials, and the little time alloted to the course of english affect the teaching and the learning of the skill of reading in Kabezi commune. a general conclusion and recommendations were drawn by the reasercher.
