This work was an examination of an Afro-Americans' claim or negotiation of his identity after the period of slavery as reflected in Richard Wright's Native Son.

It shows that the white supremacy constitutes a source of plight for some blacks who are subjected to ills such as oppression, segregation and poverty. The work further examined the black man's attempt at breaking this white belief. Thus, the character Bigger Thomas attempts to negotiate his position or space within this racist society.

This work therefore is based on the hypothesis that the negotiation of his position in this racist society is gained while breaking the white beliefs .

It then gives evidence to Richard Wright's social commitment and his response to the plight of blacks.
