Today English is largely used throughout the world and particularly in the East African Community. This study seeks to know the problems encountered by the students when using English at University level as members of the EAC.
In addition it aims at showing that the methods used to teach English may be the cause of the poor achievement in English. Also, the time allocated to English may be the cause of non-mastery of this language. This study shows the importance of English and the ways it could be improved at Universiy level.
This study was conducted at the University of Burundi in five faculties. The students of the second year classes were used in this study. In order to come out with an objective study, the simple random sampling was used. Data got by means of questionnaire and classroom observation were analyzed separately.. Data from questionnaire were analyzed with the help of tables. This study ended with the recommendations to course designers, to the Government and to students.
