In Burundi, the English language was introduced as a subject to the curriculum of the primary school in the 2006-2007 school year. This idea of teaching and learning the English from the basic level was a good enterprise. It aimed at helping children of primary schools get used to the new language at an early age and as well as helping them to acquire the necessary knowledge they need so as to communicate more easily with the English language speakers. Nevertheless, after eight years, the teaching and learning of the English has not led to the expected outcome. This fact makes more than one person ask themselves the main causes for this failure.
In the present study, the researcher has carried out, raised and reviewed the factors that affect the teaching and learnng process of the English with the aim of throwing light on these problems. It is worth pointing out that three research questions were formulated to guide the researcher and two instruments, that is, observation and questionnaire were used to collect data from the field of research. After the data were presented, analysed and interpreted, it was found out that the lack of competent teachers and appropriate teaching materials, the linguistic environments of the pupils, the opportunities for the pupils, to use the English language in contex, the persistent use of the first language (mother tongue) in teaching and learning English were the main causes of the poor performance observed in the teaching and learning of English in Burundi primary schools.
