Résumé,

This work aims to assess the impact of Burundi's integration in the East-African Community on the country's English language policy and implementation. The teaching of English in Burundi dates from the late 50,s. It was taught in the Secondary and Tertiary Educatin levels as a course subject and generally confined to classroom use. Yet a year before the formal integration of Burundi into EAC on july 1st, 2007, the Government has anticipated on its policy to provide free primary education for all children in the age group of 7-14. At the same time, a decision was made to put English in primary education curricula and in 7th form of secondary school for the frst time. From that time on, other reforms have taken place which although they are not necessarily concerned with the teaching of English, however affected its teaching. The Ministry in charge of EAC Affairs, the two technical ministries of education and their curricula bureaus have played an important role in our investigation for their role in the evaluation of felt impacts and those to expect in the future in so far as English planning and implementation in Burundi is concerned. Based on this overall aim, the researcher formulated a set of study questions as well as basic assuptions that would guide his work. After the analysis of collected data and their interpretation, we discovered that this integration has had effects in the education sector which spread beyond school environment. Coupled with that, we happened to identify problems that impede the development of English in Burundi. In this light, the researcher has formulated a set of recommenddation to the parties concerned in the hope that, if they are taken into account in the planning and teaching of English, they will undoubtedly contribute to an enhancement of Burundi's integration into EAC, with the provision of better teaching/ learning for English as a backwash effect.
