RESUME
This work is about a SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH EXPRESSIONS RELATED TO HUMOR. It seeks to know how culture poses challenges to Burundian students in order to understand English humor. The lack of sufficient Vocabulary items related in humor affects their sense of humor in English. Burundian students majoring in English department were asked to answer a questionnaire aiming at knowing how the cultural background of Burundian students hinders them from understanding English humor Results show that students in English department finds obstacles in responding and appreciating humor in English due to the fact that English language is not their native language. The challenge is also increased because a Burundian student has limited vocabulary itemsof English humor. It has also been discovered that some humorous expressions may be seen as an aggression by a Burundian student. However, some joking expressions in English may produce the comic effect in Burundian students.
