Résumé;
The study aims at showing problems that hinder the learning of the English language in Burundi primary schools in general, and in Grade Five Classes, in particular.
The hypotheses of the present study are that teaching aids and materials are not enough and available, that teachers of primary schools are unqualified in teaching English, and teachers and learners have negative attitude tawards English and live in unfavourable conditions.
For the present investigation, three data collection tools were used : classrooma observation, learners' interview and teachers' questionnaire. At the end of the research, I have found that there is a lack of teaching aids and materials, and there are no trained teachers to teach English. I have also found that both teachers and learners work in unfavourable conditions which hamper the learning of the English language and many teachers have a negative attitude towards English.
