Résumé,
This work aims at discussing the role of the dibias in Elechi Amadi's The Concubine. It explores the cosmic worl and belief system of the Igbo people. In this perspective, this research examines the people's relationship with the spiritual world and the mode of communication to gods. This is done through the analysis of the intermediate role that is played by dibias in facilitating this communication in times of joy as well as in times of trouble. This work is carried out with the help of the sociological and mythological approaches. This study is framed on the hypothesis that the dibias in Elechi Amadi's The Concubine are representatives of gods and thus mandated to intervene in human affairs at different levels. Their role is seen in spiritual as well as social issues.
This work finally concludes by showing that dibias have limited power because they cannot change God's will. Every human being has to obey and respect the gods who determine man's destiny.
