A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the equirements for the award of the degree "Licence en Pédagogie Appliquée, Agrégé de l' Enseignement Secondaire en Anglais"

The intention of this study is to find out the challenges that teachers encounter when teaching English vocabulary at Basic schools.

The study was conducted in grades 5 and 6 of Rutovu basic schools and the researcher investigates on teachers qualification teaching materials and the teaching techniques used when teaching English vocabulary at the these levels.

For this,three research questions and hypothèses were formulated to guide this study. Through this research,it was found out that teaching and learning of English general and English vocabulary in particular was not well taught in Rutovu basic schools because of the inadequacy of methods used by teachers when teaching English vocabulary.

The research recommended that the parters concerned with education should provide qualified teachers to teach English at basic schools and organize seminars in order to help them use appropriate methods to teach English vocabulary. They should also avail to schools required teaching materials so that English can be weel taught at basic schools.
