Vocabulary knowledge and english language proficiency

This study aims at assessing the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and English language proficiency.It was motivated by the fact of how vocabulary was considered as important over the past few years.Some scholars consider vocaburaly as extremely important in determining proficiency in any second or foreign language.Wilkins(1972,11) said that without grammar very little can be conveyed,without vocabulary in language proficiency,this work had to answer three research questions about determining vocabulary size of 3rd form arts pupils,whether their teachers provide them with what they really need,and if vocabulary size helps them to perform other forms of the language.A simple of 32 pupils and 4 teachers were selected in Rutovu commune to collect the data.
This data were collected,analyzed,and results discussed.Thus,the analysis of the data revealed that pupils of 3rd form arts are not proficient in English.Results of this study as presented and discussed in chapter 4,indicate that firstly,overall 3rd form Arts pupils' vocabulary size is low. Secondly,at the overall point of view,pupils of 3rd form Arts do not have the vocabulary size that could allow them to follow teachers without difficulties.
Therefore,they are not well-equipped with vocabulary,and their teachers do not focus on vocabulary during that teaching process. Therefore,it then handicap the performance of ather forms of the language.To find solutions,recommendations were made to different partners,namely pupils,teachers and the government in order to notice the importance of vocabulary.
