Difficulties encountered by teachers and learners of English in Ninth form classes of Burundi basic schools

RESUME,

This study intends to find out the difficulties encountered by teachers and learners of English during the teaching/learning process of the English language in Burundi basic school in general and in 9th form classes in particular.The study was conducted in Gatara Commune:6 schools were selected.Data from English teachers and learners in 9th form were collected by the use of questionnaires designed to seek forinformation about the qualification of teachers of English ,time imparted to English lessons,teaching materials and aids,and teachers' and learners' attitudes towards the language.The researcher also used classroom observation to see the reality in those schools.Through this research,it was found out that 9th form classes of Burundi Basic schools suffer from the lack of well-trained and qualified teachers and of language teaching aids.It was also found out that the time allotted to English class is not sufficient and favourable,and some teachers' attitudes towards the English syllabus are negative.Thus,the performance in English at the required proficiency level cannot be achieved.
