Résumé,
This study tackles the teachers' and learners' perception of teaching materials in English in Gitega basics schools. Its main objective was to check whether Basic school teachers use teaching materials while teaching English lessons in order to support the teaching/learning process and bring pupils to connect the language to its use, and make the class motivated and interested. The reasercher also sought to check if Gitega basic schools have sufficient teaching materials. The researcher used questionnaires and classroom observation as research instruments to collect data. Then, he was guided by the hypotheses which focused on the assessment of teachers' and learners' perception of teaching materials. The collected data were processed, analyzed and interpreted. After the analysis, it was concluded that most teachers do not often use teaching materials because most of the teaching materials are not available in their schools. Most schools are not well equipped as far as teaching materials are concerned. The textbooks were found to be the only used teaching materials during English language lessons even though they are also not enough in some schools. The conclusion arrived at was that teachers of English appreciate the importance of using the teaching materials in English although they are not available; this has had a negative effect on learners, performance in the English language.
