RESERVE,

This study was conducted because there still exists a poor level of perdormance in english language even in senior learners of the section of arts in secondary schools. This situation seems to result from many factors, among them is the lack or weak presence of motivation. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess the contribution of motivation on the performance of students in English language and try to instinuate strategies to echance it if necessary. At the beginning of this research,it was hypothesized that motivation is a rucial clement to English performance, that even senior learners orf arts section need to be motivated ,and that motivated students perform better than de motivated ones in English language.
The study was conducted in First form arts of four schools in Buyengero commune. In that perspective, the simple random sampling technique was used and observation, questionnaires and a test were applied as data collection tools.Sisty learners and four teachers were taken into account. The test simply consisted of the consideration of the average of learners'results in the first and the second terms during the 2016-2017 school year.Substequently, data were analyzed in tables with frequencies and perentages and others were analyzed qualitatively referring to respondents'opinions. It was finally found out that learners of first form Arts in Buyengero commune know that motivation is very important to the English language performance, but their motivation level is doubtful because of manyreasons.Senior learners also still need dfferent types of motivation .The regular changes in the educational system, the lack of sufficient materials for learning, the high rate of unemployment bad attitudes that learners abide with whem were revealed to be some of the causeses of poor level of performance in English.Data also showed that motivated learners perform better then demotivated ones in English .Data also showed that motivated learners perform better than demotivated ones in English language performance .It was also found out that boys' motivation level was higher than girls even if both of them were not sufficiently motivated. Finally, recommendations about that could be done were proposed to make various stakeholders assume their roles in making all those who were concerned with the learning process motivated.
