Résumé,
This work "Impact of churches on English language learning : A study conducted in Rumonge Commune", is a study of the role played by churches in the promotion of English language. The theme was chosen on the motivation of the expansion of English language in the world as well as in Burundi. In fact, Burundi is entertaining relations especially socio-economie with other countries which are English speakers. Therefore, the mastery of English language is on a paramount necessity as far as English is taking the lead in the communicative process than other languages. This is why we aimed at discovering environments through which English language is being promoted. Churches operating in Rumonge commune were found conducive for English language learning. The research was condusted around of three hypotheses :
a) churches operating in Rumonge commune have different views on the promotion of English language through church services.
b) English language usage in church services impacts positively on the English language learning.
c) Both formal and informal learning settings contribute to the increase of knowledge of English. To carry out our study, we used questionnaires which were administered to the church members acting in different groups such as choirs, bible study groups etc.
The respondents were randomly selected and as a sample, we took 1/2 of each group present the day of the research to represent the population under the study. As findingd of the study, churches operating in Rumonge Commune like English language but they diverge on the use of ti in church services. It was proved that protestant communities are taking the lead to promote English language through church services. This impacts positively English language learning and its expansion throughout the country.
Further more, the members of these communities showed that they are eager to improve English and feel involved to learn English and to use it. Then, the protestant communities appeared the ones which have positive attitude toward English.
