Résumé,

The aim of this study was to investigate the problems encountered by day school learners in developing their writing skill : case of 9th Basic schools in Cankuzo Province.

To carry out this research, three research hypotheses were formulated : The writing skill is a domain neglected by both teachers and pupils ; both teachers and learners face many problems while teaching and learning the writing skill ; there is a correlation between teachers' methods in teaching writing and learners' performance.

To collect data, two types of research instruments were used : questionnaires and classroom observation. These questionnaires were addressed to teachers and learners from the schools understudy. As far as the sample is concerned ten teachers and one hundred twenty one pupils were used as informants of our study. They were selected from a population of five hundred pupils and ten teachers. After analyzing the findings, I found out that the writing skill is neglected.

It was noticed that it occupied the third position compared to other skills. From the data collected we also realized that both teachers and learners face many problems.

These problems are of different kinds : There is a lack of libraries and lack of teaching materials in general without forgetting the little time allotted to English teaching as shown in findings.

We should not forget that the teacher's methods also affect the learners' performance. The teachers' methods can be a path to failure or to success. We noticed from this that a good learners' performance depends on how the teachers behave and use adequate methods in teaching and learning process.
