RESUME,
This work entitled "Assessment of class time and the improvement of the language profinciency in Burundi post basic schools:Case of first year of Languages section in selected schools in karusi province" seeks to find out whether the class time influences the English language proficiency in learners of Burundi post Basic schools. The study was conducted in Karusi province in five schools.Forty students and five teachers were used as research respondents. The data were collected by the use of questionnaire to both teachers and students.A classroom observation was also used as a tool of data collection to see the reality.
In his study, five hypotheses were formulated namely:(1) teachers do not tackle all the four basic la,guage skills during class time,(2) the time allocated to English language learning and teaching is not sufficient to develop and practise all the language skills;(3) strategies and method used influence proficiency in spoken English,(4) learners are not given enough opportunities to practise all the skills needed for their proficiency during class time, and (5) the program is not adequate to promote efficient learning and usage of english in Burundian learners. It was found to promote efficient learning and usage of english in Burundian learners. It was found out taht the language proficiency is not improved significantly because all the language skills are not allow efficient language learning since all the skills are not developed, and the learners lack enough opportunities for practices in their classroom. There are other factors hampering the language proficiency including the learners' low level and the lack of teaching materials for some skills. The information got from different informants and class visits helped the researcher to draw a general conclusion and to formulate recommendations to different parteners of education.
