RESUME,
This is sets to explore the strategies used to teach and learn the English speaking skill in Burundi basic schools.This work intends then to test a number of hypotheses that were formulated for this study.This stated hypotheses are as follows :the schools are not equipped with enough teaching materials to teach and learn English speaking skill,teachers do not use appropriate strategies when teaching english speaking skill and teachers do not give sufficient and variant activities to their pupils when teaching the english speaking skill.In order to find answers to the stated hypotheses,the researcher decided to carrt out a research on different strategies used to teach and learn the English speaking skill in 9th form.Thus, the study is carried out in muhuta commune at the following shools:ECOFO kirasa,ECOFO Gitaza,ECOFO Rutunga,ECOFO Mubanga,ECOFO Mubone and ECOFO Gitunda,from all those schools 35 pupils were chosen randomly.The teacher's questionnaire and pupils'questionnaire were administered and classroom observation was also in order to prove the real reality on the field.In the light of the research findings,the researcher findings ,the researcher discovered thet teachers and pupils do not use different and appropriate strategies in order to teach and learn the English speaking skill.It was also discovered that there were not adequate teaching materials.Finally some recommendations have been formulated towards the partners of education mainly in the government,to tearchers,to pupils and to future researchers.
