Résumé,

The main concern of this research was to assess the teaching and learning of the English speaking in 9th Form of secondary schools. This study mainly aimed at finding out the problems that secondary school learners and teachers encounter while teaching and learning the English speaking skill in9th Form of Basic Schools.

The study was conducted in order to verify three hypotheses : (i) Basic School English teachers do not use appropriate methods for enhancing the teaching and learning of the speaking skill ; (ii) The teaching materials used do not favor efficient learning of the speaking skill in English ; (iii) Basic school teachers and learners are not motivated enough to teach and learn the speaking skill in English. The study was carried out inV9th grade classes of Basic Schools located in NYABIRABA Communes, in Bujumbura Province. The data used in the study were collected using a written questionnaire for teachers and one for learners, along with classroom observation. After the analysis and interpretation of data from the three tools, the researcher came out with some findings.

It was discovered that teachers were not trained to teach English at this level, that the schools did not have sufficient teaching aids to supplement the teaching textbook, and that both teachers and learners were not motivated by the teaching/learning of English at this level. It is in the light of these findings that a number of recommendations were made at the end of this study for the partners involved in the teaching/learning of English.
