What in carried out in the research work titled "FRENCH INTERFERENCE IN ENGISH : ANALYSIS OF LEXICAL AND GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN SECONDARY SCHOOL ARTS SECTION STUDENTS' COMPOSITIONS" is included in its five chapters. The first chapter called General Introduction introduces other chapters thereby showing that, even though the written communication plays a significant role in a society, it can be hampered by the making of errors in the language usage. Since this work is concerned with Burundian schools, this chapter includes a background of information related to the study. Further information shout language families of Kirundi, French and English is found in this introductory part. In this light, this part makes clear the problem of French interference in English on the part of urundian students to the extents to the extent that there exist research questions of this study. In addition this chapter shows not only the aims and justification, delimitation and scope of the study but also the structure of the work.
The second chapter called Review of the Related Literature is the scholars' contribution to the study. Comments and conclusions made on the scholars' overview related to this work are found in this chapter.
The third chapter called Methodology of this work shows that the direct method, the diagnostic test and observation were the different procedures used to collect data. To achieve the lexical and grammatical anysis of errors found in students' sentences, there are five steps to follow that are recognition of errors, their categorization, interpretation and correction.
The fourthchapter called Data Analysis and Findings presents lexical and grammatical errors that are therefore analysed following five steps already seen in the third chapter. After the section of analysis, there is a section called Findings in which data are interpreted. The main causes of errors were found to be interference and bad teaching methods.
What is finally dealt with in the fifth chapter called General Conclusion and Recommendations is general conclusion of the work. This section provides also the way research questions are answered. If the recommendation part is considered, this work suggests what is thought of to avoid or prevent the occurence of errors and those of French interference in English in particular.
