Résumé

The present study examines the issue of cultural alienation and the paradigm of resistance in Soyinka's Death and the King's Horseman and thr lion and the Jewel. This work shows how Yoruba culture resists cultural imperialism of the British colonial master trough the characters of Sidi, the jewel of the village, who refuses to marry Lakunle the westernized man without the bride-price as stated by the traditional mores. We equally analyze the conception of Elesin's death as an element of maintaining the ancestral belief system and values ; it is also tha basis of resisting European culture in Yoruba cultural context. This study is based on the hypothesis that the hegemonic attempt of the colonial administration to impose an alien culture on the Yoruba people is the source of resistance and conflict in Wole Soyinka's Death and the King's Horseman and The Lion and the Jewel. However, the process of western education and the presence of western people in African context bring about cultural confusion in Yoruba conception of life. By pursuing this form of education, one is tempted to forget one's roots in the interest of the newly-acquired system of belief.
