A thesis submetted in partial fulfilment of requirements for the award of the degre "Licencie en Pédagogie Appliquée"

This work examines the question of morality and chastity in Henry Fielding's Joseph Andrews. It explored chastity, projecting the image of the Britsh society in 18th century, and displaying the temptations encountered by chaste people. Chastity is examined as a Christian virtue which stipulates that a man/woman must not only maintain his/her virginity till marriage but also to be faithful to one's partner after marriage. Moreover, it analysed the spirit of sexual immorality which characterised the English people in the 18th century, capturing the authorial message that is passed across to readers. Through the characters of Joseph and Fanny, the author is demonstrating that it is possible to be chaste. This demonstration proves right the following hypothesis : Christian faithful life leads a person to moral and self controlled existence on earth. The temptations encountered by Joseph Andrew, show how chastity is difficult to live, but prove at the end that what is difficult is not impossible. Using the psychoanalytic criticism, this work concluded that society can be chaste by turning back to morality and religious values.
