Résumé,
This work studies the image of the servant in Ferdinand Oyono's Houseboy and Henry Fielding's Joseph Andrews. It analyses the image of the servant by displaying the philosophy of lordchip versus bondage in both novels, thus, exploring similarities and differences. This work is centred on the hypothesis that servants in Houseboy and Joseph Andrews suffer injustice from their masters due to the question of class. Written against the New Historicism framework, this work concludes that servants can make themserlves free from oppression thanks to education and determination.
The study is situated within the experiences of the 18th century in England and colonization in Africa. The authors demonstrate that it is possible to stand up for one's rights. This research argues that a way out remains possible when the community converge on the same destiny.
