RESUME

This work deals with words and expressions related to fishing profession in Burundi. It analyses words and expressions at lexico-semantic level. The target population of this study comprises the fishermen from different fishing centers along Lake Tanganyika and those of the northern part of Burundi. To better deal with the matter, I have analyzed the collected words and expressions as provided by the informants, that is, fishermen from different fishing centers Indeed, this topic was not chosen at random. It was chosen in order to investigate words and expressions used by fishermen as a group of professionals. The methods and instruments that guided the work were random sampling technique and the interview guided by the already prepared questionnaires to different respondents such as fishermen from different fishing centers. As far as findings are concerned, I discovered that most of words and expressions related to fishing profession in Burundi are not familiar in our ordinary communication. They present opacity to intruders and consequently impede communication. Their meanings are more connotational rather than denotetional. There is a need for other researchers to do research in other groups of professionals in order to highlight and improve kirundi lexemes.
