RESUME,

This study aimed at investigating the factors causing succes and failure during the teaching/learning process so as to achieve the better learning of the English language in some fourth form of selected secondary schools in Giheta and Gitega communes. In order to establish the teachers and learners' views, a questionnaire was administered to 12 teachers and 120 learners in fourth form level classes; a visit was paid to offices in charge of education in those areas and the results of the first term, nation test and annual results for 2014-2015 have been analyzed.
The factors promoting the English language learning infourth form level classes which have been highlinghted are good organization of educational authorities, headmasters teachers and learners,sufficient teaching materials, qualified teachers ( competence and performance ), avoidance of learners' delinquency,, the programs finished in time, adapted and enough tests given to pupils and learners' willpower to work.

The factors hindering the English language learning are: overpopûlated classes, lack of instructional materials, many languages taught/learnt at once, insufficient teaching time, teachers and learners both overloaded, teachers' unpreparedness, frightening learners teachers' absenteeism, demotivating learners, bad management of the classroom and learners' low level.

As findings, the analysis of data has revealed many factors causing failure and conditions for succes in the learning and teaching of English at secondary school: both teachers and learners can be the source of success and failure if they do not work adequately, when educational authorities and parents do not follow regularly the activities of learners and when pedagogical materials are not sufficient. The analysis of data has revealed also that willing teachers and learners and learning required didactic and pedagogical materials promote the English learning at the junior level of Burundi Education.
