Résumé,

This study sets out to explore the impact of translation in English teaching and learning, and assesses why some teachers make recourse to translation instead other methods and how the use of translation would reflect on the performance in that language. The researcher used différent questionnaires (The students' questionnaire and the teacher's questionnaire) that help to understand whether Translation has an impact on English teaching and learning in Burundi Secondary education especially in Nyabikere commune. In fact, the research questions and hypotheses are answered and verified. The data so collected, were presented, analyzed and interpreted. After the analysis, it was discovered that the respondents found that translation constitutes a handicap to English teaching and learning in Burundi secondary schools. Teachers of English are advised to bear in mind that in their teaching they should vary techniques to give the learners a sense of not only understanding the language, but also communicating in it. Translation should be resorted to only when all the other techniques have failed to drive home the meaning of what is taught (vocabulary, grammar, etc).
Some recommandations are given to those concerned with the education system so that better teaching and learning of English can take place for the benefit of all the learners.
