Abstract :
Human beings are always in need of communication and use proverbs as one of the easy tools of communication because they convey a full message through few words. proverbs are not used randomly; they are used according to the context and the situation in which the users of these proverbs are but what is astonishing is that some proverbs contradict each other.

This work is concerned with thirty pairs of kirundi proverbs that contradict each other. It seeks to investigate into the causes and effects of mutual contradiction found in some Kirundi proverbs toward the social truth that conveyed in these proverbs.

After the investigation it was found out that the speaker's intention plays an important role as it is the one that causes the different reactions tothe same situation. The intention of the speaker justifies the reason why proverbs contradict each other while they all contain social truth in them. In addition, this mutual contradiction includee in kirundi proverbs bings some effects to the social truth in communication when the truth found in proverbs becomes mbiguous to the addressees and the letter miss how to manage with this truth.
