RESUME,

The present study dealt with the cultural factors hindering the listening performance in English:A case study of second and third year students of the English -Kirundi departement in the institute for Applied pedagogy,Academic year:2015-2016.The researcher made an investigation to find out whether the cultural environment of the learners and their mother tongue have an influence in their learning of the listerning skill and if it is necessary for them to know some cultural elements of the native speakers' environment for mastering well the listerning skill.Eighty students and two teachers were investigated as subjects in the field study while four students were used in the pilot study.The instrument used to collect data was the written questionnaire.The answers for the specific questions were categorized and analysed systematically.The study revealed thet students need to know English culture to master the English language,and that they listening,speaking,reading and even writing because the language skills are compementary.The researcher ended the study with a general conclusion and some recommendations to different educational partners.
