Résume,

This study sets out to investigate the causes of errors made in the use of active and passive form by Burundian English learners especially those of Ninth Form of Basic Schools. This work intended to test a number of hypotheses : (1) the lack of adequate teaching materials affects negatively performance in English active and passive forms, (2) erros made by English learners in active and passive forms are to the wrong teaching methods used, (3) the lack of sufficient time explains the learners' poor performance in English active and passive forms. For this purpose, a pupils' questionnaire and teachers' questionnaire were used. The researcher selected a sample of 61 respondents from 256 pupils and 10 respondents among the teachers in Basic Schools of Bugarama Commune, in Rumonge Province. In the light of the research findings, the researcher drew the conclusion that the causes of errors made by English learners in the use of active and passive forms are due to the lack of adequate teaching materials such as appropriate English grammar books; the inappropriate teaching methods and the lack of sufficient practice time. A number of recommendations are addressed to pupils, to teachers and to the government at the end of the study.
